Generate SHA-2 hashes.
Create SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 hashes from text or files using browser cryptography.
Generate modern SHA-2 hashes from text or local files using SHA-256, SHA-384 or SHA-512.
About This Tool
ToolsFaction Hash Generator creates SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 digests from text or files. It uses the browser Web Crypto API and returns the digest as a hexadecimal string for easy comparison, integrity checks and development workflows.
Hashing is one-way and is not the same as encryption. A hash cannot normally be converted back into the original input, and this tool is not a password storage system.
How to Use
- Enter text or choose a local file.
- Select SHA-256, SHA-384 or SHA-512.
- Generate the hash or let the selected file hash automatically.
- Copy the hexadecimal digest when needed.
Example
Select SHA-256 and hash a downloaded file, then compare the generated hexadecimal digest with a checksum published by the file provider.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which algorithms are supported?
SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 are supported.
Can I hash files?
Yes. Select a local file and the tool calculates its digest in your browser.
Is hashing the same as encryption?
No. Cryptographic hashing is designed as a one-way transformation, while encryption is designed to be reversible with the correct key.
Are files uploaded?
The hashing workflow uses browser APIs and does not require uploading the selected file for server-side hashing.
Can I use this for password storage?
This general-purpose hash tool is not a password storage system. Password storage should use a dedicated password hashing scheme with appropriate salts and parameters.
