About This Tool

UTM parameters are short pieces of tracking information added to the end of a URL. They help analytics tools identify where a visit came from and which campaign, channel or link was responsible for the traffic.

A typical UTM-tagged link can include the campaign source, medium and name, with optional values for a campaign ID, term and content. For example, the source might identify Instagram, the medium might be social, and the campaign name might identify a particular promotion.

This builder creates the URL for you and safely encodes the parameter values. It also keeps any query parameters that are already present in the original URL, making it useful for social media links, newsletters, paid campaigns, partnerships and other trackable marketing activity.

How to Use

  1. Enter the full website or landing page URL, including https:// or http://.
  2. Add a Campaign Source, Campaign Medium and Campaign Name. These three fields are required. Use clear, consistent names so your campaign data is easier to understand later.
  3. Campaign ID, Campaign Term and Campaign Content are optional. They can be useful when you need to identify a specific campaign, keyword, ad, button, creative or link variation.
  4. Select Build UTM URL, review the generated link and use Copy URL to copy it to your clipboard.

Example

Suppose you are sharing a summer sale landing page in your Instagram bio. Your website URL is https://example.com/summer-sale, the source is instagram, the medium is social, the campaign is summer_sale and the content is bio_link.

The generated link includes those values as UTM parameters. When visitors use that link, your analytics setup can use the parameters to help identify the campaign traffic.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a UTM parameter?

A UTM parameter is a tracking value added to a URL. It can describe details such as the traffic source, marketing medium, campaign name, keyword or link variation.

Which UTM parameters should I use?

Campaign Source, Campaign Medium and Campaign Name are a practical core set for most tracking links. Campaign ID, Term and Content are optional and can provide additional detail when needed.

What should I enter for utm_source?

Use a value that identifies where the traffic comes from, such as instagram, facebook, google, newsletter or a partner name. Consistent naming makes campaign reports easier to read.

What is the difference between utm_source and utm_medium?

Source identifies the specific traffic origin, while medium describes the broader marketing channel. For example, instagram could be the source and social could be the medium.

Does a UTM link change the destination page?

The destination normally remains the same. The UTM values are added as query parameters so analytics systems can read campaign information when the visitor arrives.

Can I use UTM links on social media and email campaigns?

Yes. UTM-tagged URLs are commonly used in social posts, profile links, newsletters, ads, partner links and other campaigns where you want to distinguish traffic sources.
